If you haven’t seen the May issue of Real Simple, check out Ready, Set,
Redecorate!  The story shows how Dawn Falcone of Dawn Falcone Lifestyles (and a presenter at last year’s September conference), Marcia Lerner or ReDesign Works, Kelly Sohigian of Kelly Designs, and Meg O’Kane and Mary Haynes of Tory Hayes Interiors, redesigned four rooms for astonishing and beautiful results! We had the opportunity to ask them a few questions about the experience, including how they got it and what it was like.  Here’s what they told us:

ADE: How did Real Simple find you?
Answer: For most of them, through their websites. Dawn has written several articles for ezine.com and was first found there.  There was no selection process, but they were simply notified by Real Simple that they liked their websites and were interested in having them appear in the article.  (Check out the websites that caught the eye of Real Simple: www.dawnfalconelifestyles.com, www.kellydesignsofct.com, www.toryhaynes.com, www.redesignworks.com.

ADE: Where did the rooms come from?
Answer: The rooms all belonged to clients of the participants.  Real Simple reviewed photos of the rooms and used the one they thought would work best.

ADE: How long did the process take?
Answer: First there was a meeting with the client, then Real Simple took the before shots (which took a day).  The redesign was done, then the after shots took another full day.  Overall it was a process of several days.

ADE:  What was the most difficult part?
Answer: Having the stylist change things for the after shots.  Even though the changes were minor, no one like having their work changed!  Also, the days were very long.

ADE: What was the best part?
Answer: Everyone agreed the entire process was fun.  A couple liked having a professional make-up artist and stylist work with them for their pictures.  Also, just learning about the entire way a magazine article like this works was a great experience.  And Marcia’s homeowner was thrilled, which thrilled Marcia.  Everyone agreed, everyone involved was fun and easy to work with.

ADE:  Any parting thoughts?
Answer from Dawn, “Stand your ground when it comes to dealing with the editors on using your design work.  Initially they were not going to guarantee that my name or company name would appear in the article or even near pictures of my work.  They wanted to put it in the back of the magazine.  I told them that I was not interested unless it was all right there in the article and next to the shots of my redesigns.  It’s all about marketing yourself and your business”.  Talk about persistence!

Janice Weinstein of The Spirited Design was featured in the Hartford Courant (http://www.courant.com/features/home/hc-homeredesign0411.artapr11,0,5294938.story) after she suggested the Courant hold a redesign contest . . . which they agreed to do!  And the results speak for themselves!

Congratulations to all of you!  We are so proud to be affiliated with such talented and determined people!

Like a lot of baby boomers, Mary Habres thought she wanted to retire.

The former human resources executive came to Jacksonville from New Jersey, leaving the life of the highly structured, highly political career in state government for life in a senior residential community.

The relaxation didn’t last long — Habres soon found herself restless but also stymied.
